On Friday 22nd January 2021, Mac O’Neill was tragically lost in a horrific road accident, a loss that continues to be deeply felt by family, friends, and the wider community.
Last year, in his memory, a Darkness into Light walk was organised, bringing people together in remembrance and support. The experience proved to be incredibly meaningful, offering comfort, connection, and a shared space for those navigating grief. Following the overwhelming support and sense of togetherness it created, the decision was made to hold the walk again this year.
On Saturday 31st January 2026, the community once again came together, walking side by side, sharing memories of Mac. The walk covered almost 7 miles, with participants united in remembrance.
Lotus Homes, currently developing Ballywillin Gardens in Portrush, were proud to sponsor this year’s event. Supporting initiatives that bring communities together, reflects the values at the heart of what we aim to build, not just homes, but strong, connected communities.
This year, all donations raised from the walk were given to Portrush FC. A community-focused football club dedicated to promoting teamwork, inclusion, and sportsmanship among local youth. The funds will contribute towards the construction of a small clubhouse. Which will provide a safe and welcoming space for young people to gather.
Beyond sport, the clubhouse will also serve as a valuable community hub, a place where residents of all ages can come together for events, activities, and initiatives that strengthen community spirit.
We would like to commend everyone involved in organising and participating in this year’s walk. Particularly Lauren Quigg, whose dedication made the event possible, and Jason Quigley of Portrush FC, who continues to play an important role in supporting local youth through sport.
Events like this are a reminder of the strength found in community, where remembrance and hope can walk hand in hand.
